Warrington had Burtonwood air base located here in the second world war. Following the war saw the creation of the garden suburbs of Bewsey & Dallam. Warrington is famed for its Wire production and first industrial canal, the Sankey navigation which has the first train line crossing it at Newton Le Willows. Winwick once housed a large mental hospital and also saw the site of huge battles between Oliver Cromwell and Charles 1st. Penketh saw the building of the first "concrete" ship whilst Latchford is situated on the banks of the Manchester ship canal.
